Some Feng Shui Tips for Fixes

for Natural Land Forms ( part 1)

In learning the basic concepts in Feng Shui, we now know that ideally, the house or property is built on a flat piece of land, with a "high back" preferably with the mountain at the back and a "low front", a "bright hall "or spacious area in front, preferably with meandering water nearby. We also learned that the left side (Green Dragon) should be slightly elevated than the right side (White Tiger)

But in reality, we all know that most residential properties do not have all these ideal land features. Most houses or properties are already built when we purchase them and most are built on a land that has it's own shape and form that we have no control of.

Here are some examples of properties built on different land contours ( both natural and man-made) and how they can be fixed with Feng Shui. When we say fixed, it is of course not 100%, but with Feng Shui, we can manipulate the flow of Qi into the property which of course will benefit it's residents.

Natural Land Forms

1) Property with a High Back and Low Front

Dorset, Vermont US

Often called the "Command or Emperor" position, this is the ideal land form wherein the Bright Hall is in full view from the house in this property.

Haltstatt, Austria

Gudvangen, Norway

What if the Bright Hall immediately consists of a huge body of water like in these two very scenic locations of houses in Hallstatt, Austria and Gudvangen, Norway?

Both the Hallstattersee lake around Hallstatt, and the Nærøydalselvi river which empties into the Fjord which surrounds Gudvangen, are clean, calm and meandering Both bodies of water do not have active sub-marine earthquake zones underneath. (which can cause Tsunamis). They are both right in front of the properties with the backs of the houses enclosed by the magnificent mountains. Both of these places not only have a magical view but also are considered to have "excellent" Feng Shui!

2) House with a High Front and Low Back

Corona del Mar California USA

Looks like this house has the opposite feature for the proper flow of Qi into the property since it is facing a higher land and it's back is at the lower end but towards the ocean.
However, in this case, there are mountain formations directly beyond the water at the back where one can harness good Qi.

Feng Shui Suggestions:
a) Check the direction where the water is located using the 8 mansions chart and if it is at a good location in relation to the Direct and Indirect Spirit concept, to the period and to the yearly Flying Stars, then one can harness good qi from this direction.

b) To counter the fast flow of Qi going downhill from the front, one can plant some sturdy shrubs by the left hand side of the main door and by both the inner and outer isles leading to the driveway and the garage. If this house has a balcony at the back to have a view of the ocean, decorative plants can be placed at the balcony.

c) It would be better for the owners of this home to seldom use the main door as entry, They should instead pass through the garage which should always be closed after entry. The doors from the garage leading to the house should always be kept closed. This helps regulate the fast downhill flow of Qi from the front.

d) Once the orientation of the water is obtained, by using and a further analysis of the Bazi charts of the residents living in this home, a Feng Shui practitioner can also determine the family member(s) who are most influenced by the water energy and which parts of the body will be affected.

e) Depending on the orientation of the house, if there was no water formation at the low rear end of the house, it is beneficial to plant tall trees or to construct a solid wall or fence at the back to help retain the energy and control it's fast flow {sha-qi} from the front.

3) Properties with High Left and Low Right sides

Victorian Homes "Painted Ladies" San Francisco

Another fundamental concept in Feng Shui is that (from inside the house looking out) the left hand side (Green Dragon) of a property should have a gentle slope and should be slightly elevated than the right side (White Tiger). This benefits a family wherein the main bread winner is the patriarch of the family.

It enables the father (traditionally represented by the Green Dragon) to assume control and responsibility as the breadwinner in generating wealth. The mother (traditionally represented by the White Tiger) safeguards and now-a-days also augments the wealth possibilities for the family.

This concept also follows the concept of Yang water flowing from the Left to the Right in front of the house which is auspicious.

Feng Shui Suggestions:
1) If however, the slope on the Left side forms a steep incline, then the land form features can be balanced by putting a high wall or fence, or tall trees at the Right side.

2) It is likewise beneficial to put tall trees or a high wall or fence at the Left hand side if the property has a higher incline at the Right Hand side. This land form is not good for a family with a male bread winner since the Right hand side (White Tiger) is higher than the Left hand side. (Green Dragon). Moreover, in this land form, It is Yin water that is flowing from right to left

In this setting it may be good if the matriarch is the breadwinner, but there may be constant disharmony since this defies the traditional role of the father and the mother of the family wherein the female becomes more authoritative than the male. Moreover, the children may also defy the authority of the adults.

Now-a-days though, a number of families could not help but have this exchange in roles between the mother and the father. Even though we try to create balance in the land forms, the cohesiveness and strength of a family ultimately still will depend on the choices that each individual member of the family will make. The intimate understanding and respect between couples and the support and respect of their children will be the important factors that will create harmony in a household.

4) Land Forms- Rocks or Bolders- Strewn Lands

The Rocks and Boulders on a land obstruct the Qi flow. Removal or bulldozing them will be difficult if not impossible since the rock formations are part of the land form. Feng Shui Master Joey Yap states that it takes expertise in feng shui analysis to ascertain which boulders to remove at the right timing to retain the Qi of the land.

One popular land formation in the United States which proves to be an exception of this rule in Feng Shui are the geological Red Rocks formations in the state of Arizona, particularly Sedona, due largely to their vortex energies.

5) Mounds

Sugarloaf Mound House in St Louis Missouri USA

A mound is a heaped pile of earth, gravel, sand, rocks or debris.

In European and Asian archeology, the word "tumulus" is used as a synonym for artificial mounds, especially if it is related to a particular burial customs. In the United States, most mounds are pre-Columbian earthworks built by Native Americans for a variety of reasons such as effigies; for rituals, burials and other secular purposes.

A house built near a natural mound is not auspicious especially if the house is built on top of it. A mound in front of the house is not desirable; it will block the flow of Qi.

The energy or Qi moving around the surface of the land would have difficulty to smoothly flow into the house since it will be difficult for it to rise above the elevated land area (mound). Instead the flow of energy drops off the mound and returns to the earth below.

A mound at the back of the house or property may be beneficial since it will act as a little hill as a protector, but due to the religious attachments to man-made mounds as burial symbols, most people would prefer not to have them when they buy a house.

If the natural mound is not removable, the use of plants and trees can be used to retain the Qi, but not in a manner like the picture below wherein the tall trees in front of the house would totally block the energy!

Not Advisable

6) Terraced Land

Guilin , China

Banawe Rice Terraces, Philippines

It would be good if the houses on both pictures above are not used as the primary dwelling homes of the owners.

Terraced lands are mostly man-made to break the incline and prevent soil erosion and landslide. The terracing of the land countour and shape helps to control the flow of water for irrigation such as in these rice terraces as shown on the pictures above.

Houses that are built on terraced lands and used as primary dwellings are generally not good in Feng Shui.

7) Hilltop

A house built on a hilltop is not adviseable in Feng Shui since there is no protection from all sides. Moreover, It is difficult for the Qi to flow in the house and it is hard to collect it inside the home since it will easily deflate and recede from all sides due to hill's elevation.

One remedy is to plant tall trees if able, at the back of the house or property and some large shrubs around the sides like in the pictures below.

San Gimignano, Tuscany Italy

8) Depressed Land

House on Forest Hill near the Dolomites Mountains, Italy

Although this house is located on a slightly depressed land, it has good Feng Shui due to the Dolomites mountains at the back and the left side is slightly elevated than the right side. There is also a lake by the right side where Qi can collect.

Depending on the depth of the depression of the land, houses built on sunken or depressed lands tend to have the energy stagnate inside the home. It would be difficult to move the Qi around the property.

If the depression is deep like in a crater or a deep bowl, then it will not have good Feng Shui. These homes would also suffer from flash floods. A slight depression like that of a frying pan wil be better.

9) Bog Lands, Marshes and Swamplands

Swamps and Marshlands in Louisiana

One of the reasons why houses on the swamps in Louisiana are connected to Voo-doo is because of the Yin atmosphere that the landform and area exudes especially during the night.
In the perspective of Feng-shui, bog lands, marshes and swamplands are not usable for houses because they will not be able to collect and retain the Qi.

What about these houses on these pictures below, what do you think of their Feng Shui? Any questions or suggestions?
